Data Preparation

When looking at the categories in the Excel spreadsheet it was easy to come up with research questions. It may have been easier since the information was already there, however, I didn't look at all the data when determining my hypothesis, null hypothesis and even the research question. I want to use the spreadsheet to find the answer to the questions and not the other way around. Below are my research questions, hypothesis for each, and null hypothesis for each.

~Research questions #1:
Does the age of the student affect the Millenial score?
Dependent variable:
Millenial score
Independent variable:
age of student
Hypothesis:
The younger the student, the higher the Millenial score will be.
Null Hypothesis:
The younger the student, the lower the Millenial score will be.

~Research question #2
Does gender affect the number of discussion posts made?
Dependent variable:
Number of discussion posts
Independent variable:
gender
Hypothesis:
The female gender will have on average more discussion posts than the male gender.
Null Hypothesis:
The female gender will have on average less discussion posts than the male gender.

Excel Basics

I have converted all of the wording into numbers for gender, personality type, gender, and teaching/ not teaching. This task was not too difficult once I located the find/replace tool. I didn't realize there were so many different personality types, however there were 13 on the spreadsheet. I already have in mind what my research question is going to be, and making this spreadsheet into numerics instead of words will make it so much easier to research the answer for the question. I know how to sort in ascending or descending order but have not done that and saved it because I am not sure how far we are supposed to go after changing the words to numberics.

Excel Toolpak

I used the link provided in the discussion for the Excel 2007 and had no problem downloading the toolpak. I am glad we have the discussion, I may not post much but I do read what problems others are having and it makes me feel better that I am not alone in this.

Pew Millennial Test

This test was interesting....I'm not sure what having a tattoo or body piercing has to do with being millennial but... I scored a 90, so I guess I have a lot in common with the "millennial generation.

Personality Test

My personality test gave me the same personality results...ISFP. Introverted, Sensing, Feeling, Perceiving. I guess some of my doubs in my last post about whether this was really me or not...it is. When I was answering the questions, I kept thinking of the personality profile stuff and it fit with my answers.

I would use this information and this type of personality profile in my class to get my students to realize what kind of personality they have and so that I know what kind of personality my students have and what the best way to approach them and best way to get through to them is.

Personality Profile

I'm not sure I agree completely with my personality profile...however I don't disagree completely. Some of the stuff is accurate but some of it is way off from my personality. Mine fell under the Artisan temperament and as Composer.  I am very sensitive to the pain and suffering of others and I feel as I do have a good way with young children, I have just thought that was because I have a young daughter of my own. I also am not a big fan of public speaking, however I do like conversations that are more intimate. One on one conversations or small group are ideal for me. I become nervous when speaking in front of a group on individuals my age or older. Younger audience members are ok though.

Some of the stuff I disagree with is I do not paint, scult dance or any of that kind of stuff. I don't work with subtle differences in color, tone, texture, aroma, and flavor...well maybe flavor...food is a weakness of mine and I love trying new things. So maybe it isn't as off as I first thought when I first read it...

Voice Thread

Below is what I posted on the VoiceThread. I loved watching the videos and really understood what he was talking about in them. Highly recommend you to watch the videos if you haven't yet.

What great videos! I was very interested in what was said in the first video of how creativity is killed throughout education. Teachers expect students to come up with their own ideas, their own way to solve problems, and their own answers for everything but are so quick to tell them they are wrong without really hearing why or how they believe their answers will work. During the second video, I found it very interesting that the number of kindergarten students tested on a certain aspect and considered genius was 98% however as they got older that number kept decreasing. Students aren't able to think the way their brains are trying to, they start thinking the way their teachers want them to. What is wrong with a high school student or even middle school asking...can the paperclip be 40ft long and made of rubber? Why does a paperclip have to be thought of as the one we "normally" see in a store. We learn the way something is supposed to look and then we can't deviate from that and that begins to kill the creativity in students. Just the same as why do we say all fire trucks are red, the sun is yellow and grass is green. These aren't the only colors in the crayon box so why should they be the only colors used for these objects? Not letting students have an imagination and not be able to expand on that imagination is a beginning step to them losing their creativity. If students are taught there is only one way to do everything they are going to go through life thinking it is either that one way...or it is wrong. That is not the way students need to be taught, they need to have their freedom to create, their freedom to imagine, and their freedom to experiment. Let them come up with an answer to a problem...and if it doesn't work then let them figure that out and figure out why it doesn't work and what they should do to make it work.
